Evidence Based McConnell Approach to Chronic Knee Problems
Date: Saturday 09th July and Sunday 10th July 2011 Venue: Ty Dewi Sant, University Hospital of Wales, Heath Park, Cardiff CF14 4XN Cost: £199 or £175 if booked and payment received by 30/4/2011 Tutor: Martin Rabey Martin gained a distinction in the Master of Manipulative Therapy degree at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Western Australia back in 2000, and in 2009 passed the Australian College of Physiotherapists Fellowship by Specialisation exams. He works clinically with a mixed musculoskeletal caseload in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Course Content: For the past few years teaching of the McConnell concept has been quiet in Europe. During that period, there has been a hive of activity around the world and a rapid expansion in the evidence-base for the assessment and treatment of patellofemoral pain. This has included an exhaustive double blind placebo controlled clinical trial of this patellofemoral treatment programme. http://ajs.sagepub.com/content/30/6/857.abstract With tutor Martin Rabey an updated McConnell approach will be put forward. Whilst largely practical in nature, it includes a thorough examination of all of the evidence for the management of patellofemoral disorders. The concepts, developed by Australian physiotherapist Jenny McConnell, are based on an understanding of the influence of dynamic movement patterns as a causative factor for musculoskeletal symptoms, and the beneficial adjunct of taping to immediately decrease pain and help optimise treatment. This workshop will teach you a complete patellofemoral program with proven effectiveness. In the workshop you will learn assessment skills and treatment strategies to address patellofemoral pain, patellar tendinopathy, fat pad irritation, iliotibial friction syndrome, recurrent subluxation, pes anserine bursitis, chondromalacia and osteoarthritis of the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joints. The course is a mixture of lectures, practical and patient assessment by both the tutor and the participants. At the completion of the course you will be able to: a) Assess the static and dynamic alignment of the lower limb in relation to how it affects the knee as well as assessing the alignment of the patella. b) 1. Evaluate quadriceps and gluteal control. c) 2. Evaluate the integrity of the lateral structures. d) 3. Tape to correct patellar alignment and decrease symptoms of fat pad irritation and patellar tendinosis, as well as osteoarthritis, illiotibial friction syndrome and patella subluxation. e) 4. Design a home exercise program. f) 5. Use surface EMG for neuro-muscular re-education. Please feel free to contact us for further details.
